He has been an independent journalist since 2019. He is a grantee of ICFJ, Earth Journalism Network, JournalismFund Europe and Google News Initiative and is also one of the 49 journalists selected for Youtube's Creator Program For Independent Journalists worldwide. He has published more than 500 stories on his social media channels and gained more than one million followers.

Upadhyay received a Special Mention for his documentary film, Final Days of Lithium Village, at the prestigious One World Media Awards (2026).
Footloose: A Story of Belonging (2020) was his first project as documentary filmmaker and the film was officially selected and screened in the 'Lift Off Film Festival 2020', at Pinewood Studios, UK.
